Chinese State Companies Offered Arms to Qaddafi

In the final weeks of Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi’s battle with Libyan rebels, Chinese state companies offered to sell his government large stockpiles of weapons and ammunition in apparent violation of United Nations sanctions, officials of Libya’s transitional government said Sunday. They cited Qaddafi government documents found by a Canadian journalist, which the officials said were authentic.

The documents, including a memo from Libyan security officials detailing a shopping trip to Beijing on July 16, appear to show that state-controlled Chinese arms companies offered to sell $200 million worth of rocket launchers, antitank missiles, portable surface-to-air missiles designed to bring down aircraft, and other weapons and munitions. The documents, in Arabic, were posted on Sunday on the Web site of The Globe and Mail, a Toronto newspaper.

The Chinese companies apparently suggested that the arms be delivered through third countries like Algeria or South Africa. Like China, those countries opposed the United Nations authorization of NATO military action against Qaddafi forces in Libya, facial tissue, but said they supported the arms embargo imposed by an earlier United Nations resolution.

A rebel military spokesman, Abdulrahman Busin, said in an interview on Sunday that the transitional government would seek accountability through appropriate international channels. Mr. Busin said that any country that had violated the sanctions would have poor prospects for business and other dealings with Libya, an oil-rich country.

“We have hard evidence of deals going on between China and Qaddafi, and we have all the documents to prove it,” he said, adding that the rebels have other evidence, including documents and weapons found on the battlefield, showing that arms were supplied illegally to Colonel Qaddafi’s forces by numerous other governments or companies. “I can think of at least 10 off the top of my head,” he said.

Charities helping wildfire victims need volunteers more than clothes

Donation sites for the victims of the Bastrop wildfire are overrun with bags of used clothing,LED lighting supplier, household items, and toiletries. However, many are in desperate need of volunteers to help sort and distribute the donations to families who need it.At a donation site located near the entrance of the Tahitian Village neighborhood near Highway 71 and Tahitian Drive, volunteers were busy sorting useful items from junk Wednesday.“Everywhere you look there is just bags and bags of clothes,” said volunteer Lessa Ennis.

Ennis drove in from Austin to help sort a mountain of used clothing and help fire victims find what they need.At that site, volunteers turned away clothing donations Wednesday afternoon. Ennis said cash and gift cards are in greater need at this point and volunteers can not keep up with donations. The Bastrop Greater Christian Outreach Center is running donation sites as well. The church is working with victims to locate the items they need and provide financial support. However, in the meantime so many clothes have been donated, they will have to be stored in warehouses.

Tammy Benton said the generosity of others has helped her stay strong. The wildfire burned her home and her mother’s home.“The community has been a wonderful support system,” Benton said. “It’s going to be okay. We believe God will help us recover and do great things in our lives.”Catholic Charities of Central Texas and the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store are working together to sort a huge warehouse full of donations at 9204 Brown Lane in North Austin. There are bags of clothes, boxes of toiletries, and piles of household items. The only thing lacking is more manpower to sort the donations.Volunteers are needed more than clothing donations. Catholic Charities of Central Texas Executive Director Melinda Rodriquez said cash and gift cards are also needed.
